Useful insight on Staffordshire Bull Terriers

Here’s a dog breed that is a perfect pet for just about everybody. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a wonderful dog. The breed came into being more than three hundred years ago as a cross between bulldogs and terriers. The result has been that a Staffordshire Bull Terrier comes with the strength of a bulldog and the tenacity of a terrier, not to mention a cheerful and happy disposition that is uniquely its own.

The breed was officially recognized in England only in 1935, since then its popularity has grown tremendously. If you choose a Staffordshire Bull Terrier as a pet you will bring home a bundle of joy that will be with you for 12 to 16 years. It adapts nicely even to apartments, you don’t need an open backyard to bring home a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. It’s indeed a far cry from the days when the breed was prized for its dog-fighting skills.

People tend to fall in love with this strong and muscular-looking dog. They are mid-sized with a broad chest and short muzzle. They have dark and shiny eyes. They have firm jaws and the teeth meet in a scissor grip. You can choose this terrier in coat colors that include fawn, red, brindle, black etc. Their fur is short and fine. Only a little grooming is required, rubbing with chamois will add a neat luster to the coat.

A 17-inch tall male Staffordshire Bull Terrier can weigh up to 18 kg. Correspondingly, a female can reach a height of up to 15 inches at the withers and tilt the scales at 15.4 kg.

This is a sweet-natured breed that is full of zest and ready for fun. You don’t have to strain too much to housebreak these dogs. Just let them know that you’re the alpha-male and they’ll be fine with you, the family members, and other pets in the family. The best thing about these dogs is that they are very patient with children. So parents with small kids can easily bring home Staffordshire Bull Terriers.

Do remember to give the Staffordshire Bull Terriers their share of exercise everyday otherwise you’ll have them chewing your carpets and pajamas to work off the excess energy. And because the breed is energetic, it is best to keep them on leash when you take them outside. As with all breeds, these dogs too are more predisposed to certain conditions including eye disease and hip dysplasia.
