Facts That A Dog Owner Should Know About Dog Separation Anxiety
Being the owner of a pet, it is extremely important that you understand certain behaviors that they posses. Dogs suffer from depression due to decreased proximity from their owner. It might happen that you require moving out of your home or even traveling far at times. It is during such times that your dog experiences the acute problem of separation anxiety.
This can be noticed with some puppies and even dogs. Their behavior seems to appear different when such an ordeal occurs. Usually dogs resort to mess up your home and even growl at times. They may occasionally bark incessantly when they see you getting ready and moving out of the home. Like humans these animals also do not like to stay alone at home and at times in the absence of the master.
Separation anxiety can lead to improper behavior, excitement and depression. It is important that your pet gets treated to be cured from such ailment.
How To Cure Depression
Pets can become extremely aggressive if they are left alone. In fact, most pets fear the thought of parting from their masters. This gives rise to anxiety and depression. Certain ways in which this can be abated are:
- Take your dog for walks. Provide him a chew toy which can help him to remain engaged indoors.
- Train your dog well and send him for errands.
- When at home play with him but do not over indulge. Puppies seem to grow an attachment towards their masters which only aggravates the situation.
- Move out of the house into the garden and let him watch you from the door of the house. This gives him a thought that you are close by.
- Get dressed and settle down to watch T.V or read a book. Repeat this for a number of times frequently; till he understands that you may not leave the house.
- Try opening and closing the door several times. Watch him stand up or run towards you. After some time he will feel that you are just playing.
- Now try moving out from the door and returning after few minutes. Repeat this for a number of times. This way your puppy feels that you are near to him.
- Ask him to obey your commands. Make him lie at a position inside the house. Treat him with a reward if he does so. Now slowly increase the distance from him each day. Slowly your dog will realize that you are nearby.
- Never show affection to your pet immediately when returning from outside. Allow him to calm down and feel that things are normal. Later caress and pet him.
Dog separation anxiety can be a difficult thing to get rid of. But with a little patience and tactics, this ordeal can be easily removed from your pet’s life. A professional assistance can always be helpful to sure such ailments. However, if the problem persists, consult a veterinarian for medical assistance.
